Preface

The guided activities in this workbook are intended to familiarise students with the English sounds and phonemic symbols(suprasegmental aspects of pronunciation such as stress and intonation are not included). The modelled accent is primarilyReceived Pronunciation (Standard British Pronunciation); however, there are some activities which aim to show the differences of British and American pronunciation.

The workbook is mainly designed for classroom use, so the activities may require the teacher’s explanations on the basic concepts of pronunciation such as the articulation of English sounds and word stress. The students may also need to learn how to look up the pronunciation of a word in a dictionary. They will need an English Learner’s Dictionary with a CD-ROM to learn and practise the pronunciation of the words from activities.
